Feeding consultation

Feeding consultations for patients who have cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial conditions.

Under the guidance of our program coordinator, we evaluate and manage a broad range of feeding problems related to craniofacial conditions. Our coordinator is a speech-language pathologist and a nationally recognized expert in the management of feeding disorders in children with craniofacial conditions.

How we help families who have children with craniofacial conditions

  • In-hospital newborn feeding consultations
  • Outpatient clinical feeding evaluations
  • Support to community birthing hospitals
  • Swallowing evaluations

Support, counseling and educational sessions are available to assist families and to help address any feeding issues or difficulties. Close contact is maintained with the child’s pediatrician and this includes our team closely monitoring a newborn’s weight gain.

Should specialized feeding systems be required, we will provide families with an initial supply of appropriate bottles or nipples, along with details on how to obtain further supplies.

The American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association website has an excellent set of videos designed to give families information about feeding a baby with a cleft palate.
