Orthopaedic surgery

Expert, compassionate orthopaedic care – just for kids and teens

From common childhood injuries like broken bones and fractures – to more complex ortho conditions like scoliosis, limb deformities, neuromuscular conditions and trauma – we help kids gain greater mobility and freedom.

Our specialists understand how children’s bones and muscles – which are growing by the minute– are different and need tailored diagnostic tools and treatment. Our orthopaedic surgeons partner with radiologists to review your child’s X-rays and anesthesiologists to monitor your child in the operating room.

Our team also is on the front lines in managing growing numbers of young school athletes, who come to us with a range of injuries from broken bones to overuse of muscles and joints from year-round play.

Latest medical technology for diagnosing and treating patients

X-rays, MRI and CT scans are important tools in ortho treatment, and our doctors are committed to limiting your child’s exposure to radiation. Our Children’s Pavilion is home to Central Virginia’s first EOS X-ray imaging tool, a cutting-edge diagnostic resource that uses low-dose radiography to produce 3-D images. We can safely assess patients when repeat imaging is essential, such as monitoring scoliosis or leg length discrepancies, while reducing exposure to radiation by 50 percent or more. As a referral center, we encourage families to bring any previous X-rays or imaging files when they bring their children for an appointment.

We also offer physical therapy and occupational therapy and make it easy for families by coordinating those appointments. Even better, because our therapists work closely with our orthopaedic specialists, your child gets exactly the care your doctor prescribes.

Multispecialty care

Because mobility issues often involve other conditions, orthopaedics works hand-in-hand with other pediatric subspecialties to develop the best treatment plan for your child. Our team participates in multispecialty clinics for children with:
