Undeniable joy: Building connections through speech therapy

Building connections in pediatric speech therapy

Providing STAR service – through service, trust, attitude and respect – is an expectation of all team members at CHoR and VCU Health. Sometimes the stars shine extra brightly, as was the case recently with speech language pathologist Jared Forman at our Glen Allen Therapy Center. A mom recently sent a note to explain just how special Jared’s care has been for her child and family.

Meeting speech therapy goals, having fun

“I wanted let you know what a wonderful speech therapist Jared has been for our son, Davis. In the past Davis would complain and refuse to come… However, when we were assigned Jared, everything changed.

The first thing he did was to get to know my son, ask him questions and learn about his interests. The whole time he was doing this he was listening for his speech patterns without my child realizing he was being evaluated. He even let Davis teach him about solving the Rubik’s cube, which was very empowering for my son to teach his teacher something.

This connection made working on speech fun and interesting and he was motivated to do well for Jared. Now when it's time to leave for our speech therapy he eagerly gets in the car and is even sad that he has reached his goal and won't get to see Jared for a few months. Jared really cared and Davis looked forward to seeing him every week.

As a parent, not having to coerce my child to go to a therapy appointment is life changing. Within a few months he was able to accomplish his speech goal. We are deeply grateful for Jared’s support and care as a therapist and the huge strides Davis has made under his care.”
