Is it safe to visit our hospitals and clinics? Yes and here's why

Your child’s illness or injury doesn’t stop for a pandemic – and neither do we. We’re here for kids and families, both in person and virtually.

As we re-open clinics, surgical services and therapies that were temporarily postponed or closed due to coronavirus (COVID-19), we know you may have questions, concerns and even fears.

social distancing Our goal is to keep patients, visitors and health care providers safe, while caring for everyone who needs us – and we have measures in place to do just that.

Precautions in place to keep everyone healthy

    • Masks are required for patients, visitors and team members. (Children under 2 should not wear masks.)
    • We’re screening patients and visitors with temperature checks and questions about symptoms.
    • Team members are asked to self-monitor for symptoms and stay home if they’re sick.
    • Appointments are spaced out so fewer people are in the waiting rooms.
    • We’re using special cleaning and disinfecting processes. You’ll see more cleaning staff working hard for you, too.
    • Signage throughout our facilities reminds everyone about safety measures, such as masks, handwashing and maintaining distance between groups.
    • Modified visitation guidelines remain in place. We know it’s hard and we thank you for understanding that it’s for everyone’s safety. Friends and family can stay connected virtually and send e-cards with well wishes.
    • Patients are being tested prior to surgeries, procedures and hospital admissions to be sure the health care team is using proper protective gear.
    • Telehealth services continue to expand to limit in-person interactions when appropriate.
      • We are currently seeing new and existing patients via telehealth.
      • Find more information about scheduling and preparing for a telehealth visit.
      • Some appointments still need to be in-person, such as those requiring vaccines or other hands-on treatments. We have many systems in place to keep your family safe during these visits.
      • We can help you determine whether a telehealth or in-person visit is most appropriate when you call to schedule your child’s appointment – (804) 828-CHOR (2467).

What to expect when you arrive on one of our campuses

    • Valet parking is closed. Self-parking remains open.
    • Symptom and temperature screenings will take place when you enter the building.
    • There are separate entrances at some locations, including the emergency room and Children’s Pavilion, for patients and visitors who are experiencing symptoms and those who are not.
    • You’ll be asked to wear a mask. Please bring your own – If you don’t have a mask, we’ll provide one for you. Here are some tips to help your little one understand why masks are important.
    • There are 6-foot markers on the floor for appointment check-in lines. For your safety, please wait until you are called by the next available patient access representative before approaching the desk to check-in. All patients and visitors are asked to maintain a 6-foot distance from others while in the building.
    • Please limit to one family per elevator in the Children’s Pavilion.
    • Don’t forget to pick up a coloring book with helpful, kid-friendly information on your way out!

*If your child is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please call us at (804) 828-CHOR (2467) before coming to your appointment. We’ll discuss the symptoms and ask further questions to help determine the next best course of action, as well as appropriately prepare for your arrival.

As a reminder, our ER and inpatient hospital are always open, ready and safe for your family.

If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask! We know this is a lot and we’re happy to provide any guidance you may need. A lot has changed in our normal lives since COVID-19 became a reality – what hasn’t changed is our commitment to our kids and families. We look forward to seeing you soon.
