A quick look at the current status of the COVID vaccine for kids
As we head into “respiratory virus season,” you may wondering if your family should get the latest COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Romesh Wijesooriya, division chief of general pediatrics at CHoR, answers five questions he and his team are hearing from families.
Who can get the 2025-2026 COVID vaccine?
On Sept. 19, 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) unanimously recommended that COVID-19 vaccination for individuals 6 months and older be determined by individual decision-making.
Individuals 6 months and older with at least one high-risk health condition (such as asthma, diabetes, obesity or heart disease) – as well as anyone over the age of 65, with or without underlying conditions – are automatically eligible for the vaccine. Others can receive a vaccine with a prescription after talking with their health care provider.
Does CHoR recommend children receive the 2025-2026 COVID vaccine?
We align our vaccine recommendations with those of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which are as follows.
Age 6-23 months
- The AAP recommends that all children in this age group receive the updated COVID-19 vaccine.
Ages 2-18 years
- The AAP recommends a single dose of the updated vaccine for those who have a high-risk condition, live in a group setting, are unvaccinated or live with someone who is at high risk.
- The AAP emphasizes that the vaccine should be available for any child aged 2-18 years whose parent or guardian wishes for them to have vaccine protection, regardless of their risk factors.
Because our recommendations align with those of the AAP, if you want your child to receive the 2025-2026 Moderna COVID vaccine, we support your decision and will help facilitate that for you.
Where can I get a 2025-2026 COVID vaccine for my child?
CHoR providers can give the vaccine during appointments or inpatient visits. External community pharmacies also have the vaccine, but many will only vaccinate children above a certain age. We recommend calling the pharmacy before going to make sure they have the vaccine and find out about their age guidelines. If your child requires a prescription based on the criteria above, make sure you have that too.
What COVID-19 vaccine is available at CHoR?
We are primarily giving Moderna’s Spikevax to patients 6 months and older at CHoR and VCU Health.
Will insurance cover the 2025-2026 COVID vaccine?
Yes. The ACIP decision also recommended immunization coverage through all payment mechanisms including private insurance and programs such as Vaccines for Children Program, Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicaid and Medicare, as well as insurance plans through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace.
