On March 3, 2013, Cindy and Owen Wyatt were told that their three-year-old son, Logan, had a malignant tumor in his brain. Exactly four years later, they found themselves back at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU for a very different reason. On the anniversary of their son’s diagnosis, they celebrated the opening of a room designed to offer peace and tranquility for families. The room was made possible by their foundation.

Thankfully, Logan’s treatment was successful and he continues to be in remission. Cindy and Owen remember all too well, however, what the days, weeks and months were like in the midst of his treatment.
 

They endured uncertainty, stress and difficult discussions with Logan’s health care team. Now, they have set their sights on helping those who are following in their footsteps.

Willow Tree Foundation, started by the Wyatts in 2014, donated the funds to transform the family room into a calming environment – a place where private conversations can take place, or where families can simply escape for a moment and take a deep breath. The room was thoughtfully designed to feel like home, with calming colors and comfortable furniture.

“It’s so nice to have a place that doesn’t look like a hospital,” said Kathryn Carter, who has spent many hours at CHoR. Her grandson has been here since his birth two and a half years ago.

Carter is among the many family members who have already enjoyed the remodeled space.

This is the second project that has been funded by Willow Tree Foundation at CHoR. They supported the renovation of the playroom first and plan to focus their attention on the consult room in the pediatric intensive care unit next.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” added Jeniece Roane, interim vice president for children’s services.

We think she speaks for our current patients and families, as well as those to come, with her expression of gratitude.
