Making a difference for children with sensitive urological conditions: Serving patients with complex needs throughout Virginia

Our skilled pediatric urology team provides relief and life-changing treatments for kids living with urinary issues in the bladder and kidneys, along with conditions related to reproductive organs. Our fellowship-trained physicians and specialists see more than 7,500 young children and adolescents each year and lead a highly successful program marked by overwhelmingly positive outcomes. We also serve as a referral center for patients with complex needs throughout the Commonwealth and greater Richmond area.

Advanced minimally invasive treatment for common urinary conditions

Most patients require treatment for relatively common conditions that occur early in development, such as undescended testis, hernias and hydroceles (fluid in testicles). Many of these conditions are managed surgically and healed before the child is ever aware there was an issue – some patients can be managed with minimally invasive surgery that heals in a way that leaves no scarring.

You can trust our team to approach urinary, kidney and reproductive issues and abnormalities in your child with a compassionate focus on diagnosis and treatment, improvement of function, and maintaining a healthy system.

Bedwetting and incontinence

Our most common treatments are for kids with bedwetting and incontinence issues. Our treatment program helps them better control their conditions and overcome stigmas.

Muscle retraining

Many children tend to restrict their muscles when voiding bladder. With advanced technology and behavioral modification, we can help children “unlearn” these behaviors and pass urine normally.

Newborn circumcisions

We provide multiple options for circumcision of infants up to 12 weeks of age at outpatient offices. Set up your appointment now.

Urinary conditions and treatments

We provide treatment for conditions at the Children's hospital including:

  • Prenatal urinary tract dilation (hydronephrosis-enlarged kidneys)
  • Bedwetting
  • Dysfunctional voiding
  • Epispadias (urethra malformation)
  • Hydrocele (fluid in testicles)
  • Neurogenic bladder (lack of bladder control) due to spina bifida or spinal cord injury
  • Penile anomalies including hypospadias (malformation of penis)
  • Posterior urethral valves (impeding of urinary flow)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Undescended testis
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Urinary tract obstruction
  • Vesicoureteral reflux (when urine flows backward into kidneys)

Testing and treatment options are personalized to meet the needs of the child and their family. We offer a full range of diagnostic and treatment options, including:

  • Biofeedback (using safe, electrical sensors to train muscles)
  • Bladder re-training
  • Nuclear medicine studies
  • Ultrasound
  • Urine studies and hematologic (blood) evaluation
  • Urodynamics with fluoroscopy (X-ray to see how the bladder works)
  • Voiding cystourethrogram/VCUG (to see the draining of the bladder; sedated)
  • Magnetic resonance urography

If management and monitoring are not the best option, surgery is considered. We strive to use minimally invasive or robotic techniques whenever possible to improve surgical outcomes and recovery time.

A multidisciplinary approach to complex conditions

Not all urologic or reproductive conditions are common. When young patients are diagnosed with more complex cases, we work in close collaboration with other CHoR specialists to provide multidisciplinary care. Specialized pediatric clinics include:

  • Differences of sex development (DSD), collaborating with endocrinology, psychology
  • Kidney stones, collaborating with nephrology
  • Prenatal urinary tract dilation, collaborating with nephrology and maternal fetal medicine
  • Spina bifida, collaborating with rehab, neurosurgery, and orthopedics

Our urologist specialists are leading global advances in pediatric urology

Led by C.D. Anthony Herndon, MD, we are advancing local and international efforts to expand and improve access to specialty urologic care throughout Virginia and beyond. Our goal is to become a top 20 urology program in the United States and a referral center of excellence in the Mid-Atlantic.

In 2017, the Children’s Hospital Foundation announced a $2.9 million grant to support urology. The funds are being used to recruit additional surgeons, increase clinical research and expand clinical programs.

Our advanced robotics program offers minimally invasive robotic-assisted kidney and bladder surgery. Today, it’s a standard tool for obstructed kidney surgery in pediatric urology.

Not all treatment requires surgery. We use behavioral therapy and biofeedback – using safe, electrical sensors to help control bodily functions – to treat patients with voiding dysfunction. The condition, marked by the inability control the bladder, impacts up to 10 percent of children, and includes patients with urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections and bedwetting.

CHoR is the site of “the Society for Fetal Urology National Registry for children with a prenatal urinary tract dilation,” a common condition that blocks flow of urine from the kidneys. While most kids do well in treatment, a significant number are at increased risk of urologic disease, and the registry is assisting in research to develop effective treatment protocols that will better define the role of antibiotics and need for invasive postnatal imaging.
