Residency program

Pediatric Residency, Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU

Welcome to the Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Established in 1934, our program has a long and rich history. Today, the program provides a broad and outstanding educational experience. Our residents are provided with a comprehensive and stimulating curriculum that includes clinical care, teaching and research. Our faculty is committed to providing the highest quality education in a supportive and collegial atmosphere. The faculty, while always remaining readily and easily accessible, empower residents to learn the critical management skills necessary to function autonomously. The residency program emphasizes balance, diversity and flexibility. It is designed to provide residents with exposure to a wide variety of pathology and patient care environments, while serving the urban, suburban and rural pediatric populations of Richmond and surrounding areas.

Mission statement

The mission of the VCU Pediatric Residency Program is to train physicians to become expert pediatricians committed to providing superior medical care to infants, children and adolescents. Our curriculum emphasizes the delivery of compassionate medical care, an active role in child advocacy, a dedication to community service, a plan for lifelong learning and a desire for the advancement of medical knowledge. These are the essential qualities that we believe define an exceptional pediatrician.

A message from the program director

JGeneChen's headshotAs pediatricians, we are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children. A key part of this mission is educating and training the next generation of physicians. Our university-based, academic residency program emphasizes hands-on care at the bedside, serving a diverse patient population, achieving health equity, patient and family advocacy and learning from faculty in all major pediatric subspecialties.

As a junior resident, you will work alongside upper-level residents, fellows and faculty to build your foundational knowledge. As a senior resident, you will care for patients, lead a team, teach and pass on your expertise and engage in scholarship. Upon graduation, you will be well prepared for the next step in your career, whether it be academic medicine, a subspecialty fellowship or practicing general pediatrics in the community.

We are excited to be part of your journey. Please reach out with any questions.
