Supporting our residents

Tandem block schedule

All of our scheduling is done in 2-week blocks.  Each block of Inpatient is either followed by or preceded by a block of Outpatient or an Elective.  This scheduling allows for work-life balance and a variety between rotations.

No 24-hr shifts

There are no 24-hr shifts in our program, even on weekends.

Coaching program

All of our residents have an assigned Faculty Coach, who meets with them quarterly to review their progress and discuss their career goals.  Our Faculty Coaches sit on our Clinical Competency Committee.

Graduated autonomy / Primary Care Exception

We offer the Primary Care Exception in our Pediatric Group Practice (PGP) Continuity Clinic. PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents who have achieved certain competencies can see their own patients with less attending supervision and faster workflow, which promotes autonomy.

Steering committee

The Steering Committee is composed of residents elected by their peers.  The Committee meets regularly with leadership to review resident feedback.

Town hall

The chief residents with the support of residency leadership meets regularly with residents during Town Hall to receive feedback directly.

Academic half-day

Our conferences are scheduled during academic half-day.  The time is protected and residents have no clinical responsibilities during their conferences.

Retreats

Each class has a retreat once a year.
