Rheumatology

Helping ease your child’s joint and muscle pain

For many children, the pain of inflamed joints and muscles makes it difficult to just be kids. That’s where our pediatric rheumatology team comes in, as we provide expert diagnosis and patient-focused care for children with rheumatic diseases, such as juvenile arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders. Our comprehensive care includes testing, treatment plans, and patient and family education.

The rheumatology experts at Children’s Hospital are among a limited number of specialists nationwide with extensive, specialized training in pediatric rheumatology and rheumatic diseases. We focus on finding the right treatment to help your kid focus on being a kid.

Conditions and treatments

We help children manage a range of conditions, including:

  • Antinuclear antibodies (ANA)
  • Chronic multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO)
  • Juvenile ankylosing spondylitis
  • Juvenile dermatomyositis
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)
  • Linear morphea
  • Lyme arthritis
  • Pain amplification syndrome
  • Patellar femoral syndrome
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Raynaud's
  • Rheumatic fever or post-strep arthritis
  • Sjogren's
  • Spondyloarthritis
  • Systemic and linear scleroderma
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Uveitis
  • Vasculitis

The first step of care typically involves determining the cause of a child's pain and other associated symptoms, followed by developing treatment plans to address them. Our diagnostic tools include MRIs, x-rays, blood work and/or ultrasound technology. Depending upon your child and their condition, we aim to alleviated symptoms through tailored approaches, which might include injections (with or without sedation), medications and physical therapy.

Why choose Children’s Hospital?

Besides offering leading-edge care, our pediatric rheumatology can easily and quickly collaborate with clinicians in many of our other specialty areas, including cardiology, immunology, nephrology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical therapy and pulmonary medicine. This ensures timely, personalized and comprehensive care for your child.
