Our Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is the region's most comprehensive program for children with diabetes and other endocrine disorders, which occur when your child’s hormone system doesn’t function as expected. Our multidisciplinary team of experts offers medical care, clinical research trials, medical nutrition therapy, psychological support, education and support groups – all in one location.

Diabetes and related disorders

The center provides complete care for children diagnosed with the following conditions:

  • Abnormal glucose tolerance
  • Acanthosis nigricans, a thickening and darkening of the skin
  • Elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels
  • Hypoglycemia, caused by low levels of blood sugar
  • Metabolic syndrome, co-existing conditions that can increase risks of other complications, including diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal disorder
  • Type 1 diabetes (insulin dependent)
  • Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent)

Services for children with all forms of diabetes include:

  • American Diabetes Association-recognized diabetes education program
  • Clinical research trials
  • Computerized pump and meter data downloads and interpretation
  • Continuous glucose monitoring systems
  • Health education

Endocrine disorders

Our center provides diagnosis, treatment and management for all endocrine disorders, including:

  • Adrenal disorders
  • Endocrine tumors, polyglandular autoimmune syndromes
  • Growth disorders: Turner syndrome
  • Hyperlipidemia, a genetic disorder that leads to high levels of lipids in the blood
  • Hypertension
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Obesity
  • Pituitary abnormalities, tumors
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Puberty disorders
  • Sexual differentiation disorders
  • Thyroid disorders: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules and cancers
