Acute care

Now located in the Children's Tower

If your child needs to be admitted for an acute or chronic illness or injury, your entire family will be cared for by our compassionate team of doctors, nurses, therapists and other professionals throughout the hospital.

Our team works closely with pediatric emergency physicians and medical and surgical subspecialists – such as doctors trained in heart, brain or kidney issues – to bring our full continuum of care to treat children of all ages with both common and complex medical issues.

During their stay, your child also may be cared for by dietitians, teachers, and art or music therapists. Your entire family can benefit from the services of our social workers and child life specialists, who can help you navigate the necessary care and resources.

Family-centered care

We believe a partnership among children, families and health care providers is the best way to provide the most effective and complete care. We call this innovative approach family-centered care, as we engage both the child and their family in the daily decision-making process.

Hospital physicians

While your child is in the hospital, our hospitalists will supervise and coordinate all aspects of their health care. Hospitalists only see patients in the hospital setting, so can provide you with timely updates on your child's condition, and work closely with your primary care pediatrician to ensure appropriate follow-up treatment.

Our hospitalists also lead the care by our comprehensive health care team, which includes residents and fellows who are completing specialized and advanced pediatrics training. Residents are doctors who have completed medical school. Fellows have already completed their residency to become a general pediatrician, and now are training to be specialists in the care of hospitalized children. You also may see students from the VCU School of Medicine.

Subspecialty care

Care for kids with certain conditions, such as cancer, cystic fibrosis and others, is directed by subspecialists in those areas. These doctors work closely with the entire team to ensure specialized, comprehensive care for children with unique medical needs while they're in the hospital.
