Complex skin conditions demand more than surface-level care. That’s why Duaa AbdelHameid, M.D., partners closely with patients and care teams to deliver thoughtful, coordinated treatment.

AbdelHameid is a dermatologist at VCU Health specializing in complex medical dermatology. She frequently treats conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), sarcoidosis, pyoderma gangrenosum and severe drug reactions — which, along with being painful and disruptive, are often intertwined with broader medical issues.

As director of inpatient dermatology consults, AbdelHameid collaborates with hospital teams to manage acute skin findings in hospitalized patients. She views that teamwork as essential to patient success. “I work hand-in-hand with our nurses and medical assistants to ensure every patient receives coordinated, high-quality care,” she says.

The intellectual breadth of medical dermatology is a source of consistent fascination for AbdelHameid, who in addition to treating patients serves as an assistant professor of dermatology at the School of Medicine.

“The field sits at the intersection of so many others: infectious disease, rheumatology, immunology and oncology,” she explains. And she is particularly energized by the pace of innovation: “The field is rapidly evolving with new treatments, which is a positive and exciting factor for both us as clinicians and for our patients.”

After earning her medical degree from the VCU School of Medicine — where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society — AbdelHameid completed an internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a dermatology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern. She is board-certified in dermatology and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
