Part six of a series introducing the passionate health care team behind our growing Level 4 NICU
Dr. Nayef Chahin came to CHoR as a fellow and is now an attending neonatologist and program director for our Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship. From caring for the sickest and smallest infants, to teaching the next generation of specialists in neonatal medicine, he’s making a monumental impact.
Dr. Chahin explains what inspires him on a daily basis and why he’s excited about the new NICU space opening in the Children’s Tower next month.
How long have you worked in the CHoR NICU?
I joined the CHoR NICU in 2015 as a neonatal-perinatal fellow and transitioned to faculty and a neonatologist in 2018, making it 10 incredible years here!
Why have you stayed this long?
I’ve always wanted to work in a place that values me as an individual, makes me feel part of a family, and supports my growth both personally and professionally, something I’ve experienced here since day one and continue to feel every day. This environment constantly challenges me to become a better version of myself, provide the highest level of care to our patients and their families, and mentor our trainees so they can carry that same commitment forward wherever their careers take them.
Is there a moment in your career that stands out as extra special?
It’s hard to choose just one moment, every day here feels special. Watching our sickest patients overcome incredible challenges and finally go home is a privilege. Equally rewarding is seeing our trainees provide exceptional, compassionate care to patients, families and everyone around them. Witnessing their growth and knowing we’ve helped shape that is something I experience every single day.
What do you hope families in the NICU take away from their interactions with you?
I want families to know that we’re here for them every step of the way, no matter the challenges they face in the NICU. We’re all on the same team, and their voice as parents is not only welcomed, but also essential. Their insights and involvement help us provide the very best care for their baby.
What are you most looking forward to about the new NICU space in the Children’s Tower?
I’m most excited about the opportunity to expand our space so we can broaden the care we provide to our patients and the entire CHoR community. Nothing is harder than knowing that limited space can prevent us from caring for more babies. Removing that barrier with the new NICU is both deeply rewarding and incredibly exciting.
What else do you want people to know about your team in the CHoR NICU?
We strive every day for excellence and growth. That dedication is evident in the care and commitment shown by our nurses, respiratory therapists, ancillary staff, neonatal nurse practitioners, trainees and neonatologists. Despite the challenges of high acuity and census, everyone shows up with a smile and a genuine eagerness to care for our patients and their families. I’m grateful to be part of a team that never stops striving to improve care for our tiniest patients. This new space represents hope, progress and a commitment to families that we’ll always do everything possible to give their babies the best start in life.
