6 safety questions to consider when holiday shopping

As holiday shopping ramps up – or wraps up if you’re an early bird – don’t forget about opportunities to give your loved ones the gift of safety. Our Safe Kids Virginia team recommends asking yourself the following questions as you make your purchases.

Is your child getting a new bike or scooter?

Safety gear is a perfect and necessary complementary gift. Make sure they have an approved, well-fitting helmet, along with wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads for all wheeled sports.

Is their safety gear for other favorite activities still in good condition and fitting properly?

This could be an ideal time to gift a new mouth guard, helmet or other equipment specific to their sport(s).

Looking for a gift that’ll keep on giving?

Consider purchasing swim lessons. If there’s an indoor pool near you, swim lessons can be a great way to stay active during the winter months and get ready for a safe and fun summer ahead. Speaking of summer, if water activities are in your family’s future, U.S. Coastguard approved life jackets are another great gift idea.

Will someone be the lucky recipient of a new television or piece of furniture?

Be sure to include mounting straps or brackets to fix it to a wall stud and prevent tipping. If straps or brackets don’t come with the item, they can be purchased separately at a hardware store.

Do you have a parent on your list?

New – and even experienced – parents are sure to appreciate gifts to help keep their kids and families safe. Here are a few ideas:

    • Cordless window blinds
    • Door alarms for doors with pool access
    • Fire escape ladders
    • Fire extinguishers
    • Fireplace gates
    • Gun locks and lock boxes
    • Locks for ovens, toilets and cleaning/medication cabinets
    • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
    • Safety gates for stairs

Is there a teen driver in the family?

Show your love by stocking their vehicle with safety supplies.

    • Flashlight
    • Jumper cables
    • Roadside safety kit
    • Window punch/seatbelt cutter
