Concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI)

Know how to spot the signs of a concussion or traumatic brain injury

Any jolt or blow to the head or body that causes significant impact or motion to the head may cause bruising, bleeding, swelling or shearing to the softer brain as it moves inside the hard structure of the skull. The effect to the brain may result in a traumatic brain injury, or concussion. The blow could occur in a fall, car crash, athletic activity or assault.
