Asthma friendly cleaning tips

Asthma-friendly cleaning

General cleaning tips

  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and strongly scented cleaners around your child with asthma.
  • Use unscented detergents and fabric softeners.
  • Avoid air fresheners, deodorizers, plug-ins and candles.
  • Use baking soda instead of scented air fresheners to absorb odors.
  • Create your own all-purpose cleaner by mixing 1/4 cup white vinegar with 4 cups of water and 3 to 4 drops of liquid castile soap in a spray bottle. You can spray the cleaner on multiple surfaces including countertops and windows. Wipe with a cloth or rag. Use newspapers to wipe down glass.
  • If you prefer to buy cleaning products, try Seventh Generation brand.

Tubs, toilets and sinks

Combine baking soda and liquid castile soap on surface, and then rub with a rag. Rinse well.

Dusting and polishing

Use a damp cloth or rag to wipe down surfaces. Use a few drops of olive oil to polish surfaces.

Getting rid of mold and mildew

  • Mold is found in every home. It can be found in dark and damp areas.
  • Spray white vinegar directly onto moldy areas. Let dry, then scrub vinegar and mold away.
  • Lemon juice and salt, or white vinegar and salt can be used to create a paste to scrub areas with mold. Dry surfaces when finished.
  • Fix plumbing problems and leaks as soon as possible.
  • Do not paint over mold. Remove mold and dry surface completely before painting.
  • Do not use humidifiers or vaporizers. They can be mold factories!
  • If possible, use a dehumidifier or run the air conditioner in warm weather.
  • Your child should avoid basements, laundry rooms and any room with mold, musty smell, dampness or water stains.
  • Hang up wet towels to dry after showers or baths. Open the window or door to air out the bathroom during and after showers and baths.
  • Run the bathroom fan for at least 15 minutes after a shower or bath to help remove moist air.
