Palliative care

Healing, comfort, and hope

Our inpatient Supportive CARE team is devoted to enhancing quality of life for children with serious illnesses and supporting their loved ones through seamless, holistic, and family-focused care.

Supportive CARE

Supportive care, also known as palliative care identifies, prevents, and treats suffering in children who have serious illnesses through:

  • Communication and coordination of care
  • Advanced care planning
  • Relief of symptoms
  • Emotional and spiritual support

Our goal is to continue the ongoing treatment of the underlying illness, while striving for optimal comfort and quality of life at any stage of life. Supportive care can also be provided with disease-directed treatment,

Caring for your whole family

When a child is seriously ill, everyone in the family can use a little extra support. That’s why we make sure to take care of everyone in the family. We can help ease the family’s stress through services such as:

  • Open communication between family and medical team
  • Connections to school and community resources
  • Coordination among inpatient, outpatient, and home settings
  • Decision making centered around the family
  • Age-appropriate grief and bereavement counseling for family
  • Music therapy
  • Pet visitation
  • Therapeutic play and art activities

The right time for supportive care

It's never too early for supportive care services. Our team can be brought in at any point to help with symptoms and concerns related to a serious illness. By embracing a child-friendly, family-centered approach, we promote healing, comfort and hope. Our supportive care team includes:

  • Social work
  • Pastoral services
  • Child life services
  • Medical providers

We collaborate with the other members of the child's medical team to provide pain and symptom management, assistance with complex medical decisions, and psychological and spiritual support.
