Research areas

Dr. Couser has special research interests in visual problems in school-aged children, pediatric instrument-based vision screening in the preschool population, and genetic eye diseases including rare inherited disorders affecting the eyes. His current IRB studies include:

  • Epidemiology of Strabismus and Cataracts in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: An Analysis of a Pediatric Population from 2002-2020 (Role: Principal Investigator)
  • An Observational, Multicenter Study of the Prevalence of Cerebrotendinous Xanthomatosis (CTX) in Patient Populations Diagnosed with Early-Onset Idiopathic Bilateral Cataracts (Role: Principal Investigator)
  • Characterizing the Timeframe from Initial Onset of Visual Symptoms to Date of the Diagnosis Confirmation of Patients with Inherited Retinopathies (Role: Principal Investigator)
  • A Retrospective Review of Ophthalmic Manifestations in COVID-19 Patients at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems (Role: Principal Investigator).
