Hi and welcome to VCU!! I am so glad you are looking at our residency program, and we wish we could meet you in person. I love VCU for a million reasons, but here are some of the highlights: I love that we serve a diverse, largely at-risk patient population over a huge geographic area. Our doctors across all specialties are experts in providing and teaching about trauma-informed and culturally competent care. The program is welcoming, inclusive and supportive, and the tandem two-week scheduling with alternating inpatient and outpatient rotations helps keep us all healthy and sane. Our program is wonderfully family-friendly; I have a three-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter, and program leadership has been awesome in making sure I can be there when my kids need me and be the best mom to my kids that I can. And my co-residents are like my kids' extended family -- no better environment to raise a child than among a great community of budding pediatricians!

I am from Richmond and went to med school at VCU, and I love it here. We are less than two hours from the beach to the east and the mountains to the west -- we make the quick trip to go hiking in Shenandoah National Park almost every time I have a day off. My neighborhood, Church Hill, is less than a mile from the hospital, full of awesome shops and restaurants and beautiful parks overlooking the river and the city, and affordable enough that we could buy a house in residency.

Good luck as you go through your interviews and choose your next steps! Please feel free to contact me with any questions about being a parent in residency here or anything at all about the program.
