Pediatric nephrology fellowship program
CHoR is a premier training site for future academic pediatric nephrologists
Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s (CHoR) fellowship program in nephrology is a three-year ACGME accredited training program. A fellow finishing training in this program is assured of a sound education in clinical nephrology, a firm basis in research methodologies with excellent personal and professional development opportunities.
Program opportunities
Clinical training
The program provides an abundance of opportunities for fellows in training. Greater than 100 treatments with acute PD, hemodialysis or CRRT are performed each year and percutaneous renal biopsies average 40-45 per year. Pediatric transplants are a rich source of clinical exposure for fellows. Each fellow conducts a continuity clinic with their own panel of patients. Last year there were nearly 6000 in-patient and out-patient visits. Opportunities for combined training in pediatric and internal medicine nephrology may be available.
Research training
Research opportunities are available for fellows within the divisions of nephrology and internal medicine nephrology. In addition, there exist opportunities for basic science research within the schools of Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry on the VCU campus. Each fellow will have a mentor during the three years of training who will act as a resource for the fellow in the design and execution of their research. It is anticipated that a fellow will complete training with a research portfolio appropriate for an academic position at the assistant professor level.

- Antenatal conferences (held twice a month)
- Journal Club
- Research conferences
- Pathology conferences
- Division business meetings (held weekly)
- QI conferences
- M&M conferences (held quarterly)
Fellows will be given increasing opportunities over the three years of training to present at conferences and to learn the skills necessary to plan and lead clinical and scientific meetings.
How to apply
Applications should be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The Nephrology Fellowship Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).
