Lauren’s story

"In that moment, days after receiving a devastating cancer diagnosis, my husband and I realized that while this is the scariest and probably the most challenging time of our lives, our job was not only to get the best care for Lauren but to enable a childhood here at the hospital and throughout her treatment." - Marisa Cherry, Lauren's mom.

Improving The Lives of Children

The children featured on this website represent just a small fraction of the children that come to Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU each year. We hope their stories will help demonstrate how your support allows Children's Hospital Foundation to provide the funding necessary to develop the clinical, research, and teaching programs that will benefit our community’s children now and into the future.

Meet Shailyn: A patient who is fighting a rare, progressive disease. Shailyn has been making friends at CHoR for nearly three years. The brave, sassy, smart and social 8-year-old was diagnosed with MPS VI in November 2017.

When Mikey was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy five years ago, Michael began frantically searching the web. How could he help his child? Where did they need to go? He found the answers to some of these tough questions at CHoR.

In May, Jennifer Powell loaded up, buckled her daughter Bethany in the car and set the GPS for Richmond – a 16-hour drive from her home in Arkansas. She’d never been to Virginia, but was on a mission to get the care her daughter needed.

Making an impact

In a single year, more than 60,000 children receive care at CHoR, and Children’s Hospital Foundation helps ensure that these children continue to have world class pediatric health care close to home, right here in Central Virginia.

Children and families come to us from Virginia, across the U.S., and often from out of the country. We cover nearly every pediatric health care need under the sun – from casts to cancer – from simple to complex – we do everything in our power to give kids a shot at a healthy future.
