President’s post: Ushering in the future of children’s health

This afternoon, we cut the ribbon on the long-awaited Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU Children’s Pavilion, an outpatient pediatric specialty care clinic at Broad and 11th streets. In doing so, we did more than celebrate the opening of an impressive and beautiful new building; we ushered in the future of children’s health.

Bar none, VCU’s new Children’s Pavilion is the most advanced outpatient center for children in our region. It is a landmark facility for Central Virginia that re-enforces the fact that VCU has a premier medical center on par with the best anywhere in the nation. The new Pavilion is an oasis for children and their families, a safe, welcoming and convenient home to the best care possible given by the most dedicated physicians, nurses and providers imaginable.

This facility was the largest construction project in VCU’s history, and it may also be the most transformational because of the profound difference it will make in the lives of so many people, This includes the most vulnerable members of our community, children who suffer from the most-complex and difficult pathologies.

In this way, the Children’s Pavilion builds on our legacy of providing the very best care for people who need us. For generations, VCU has been the undisputed leader in pediatric medicine in Central Virginia. We have saved and improved countless young lives, and that remarkable and humbling work will now continue in the best outpatient facility imaginable. The Pavilion features leading-edge technology and fosters the interprofessional and collaborative care that is the unique trademark for VCU Health.

It also accommodates the growing demand for outpatient children’s services in our region. Because 90 percent of pediatric care is outpatient, ease of access is not just convenient, it is critical.

As president of VCU and VCU Health, I am thrilled with the ways that our new Children’s Pavilion will advance our mission in the region. As the father of two, I am grateful that so many young lives will be made better because of my colleagues there.

I also commit that VCU will continue to evolve so that we can serve the changing needs of our community in the most relevant ways through industry-best clinical care, life-saving research and the unmatched education and training that has been the heart of our mission for almost 180 years.

Come see the future of children’s health in person at our new Children’s Pavilion, or take a virtual tour at chrichmond.org/pavilion.
