Meet our future pediatricians and pediatric specialists

Our clinical team has the privilege of helping to train promising future pediatricians and specialists. These residents and fellows come from near and far for comprehensive, hands-on education at CHoR. Get to know them in this spotlight series.

    Benjamin Yoon, MD
    Pediatrics Resident, PGY 3

I am a third year resident here CHoR. I’m currently involved in research to study tracheal aspirates from children with suspected ventilator associated infections, development of an ICU-specific feeding protocol, and the effect of an abusive head trauma education program for all families discharged from our newborn nursery.

Coming to VCU was an easy choice for me. As a medical student I felt welcome in the department and knew people here were working to help me succeed. I remember residents and attending physicians were excited to see my developing interest in pediatrics. The pediatrics department is consistently strong because of the attendings and long-term staff who foster a culture in each incoming class of residents to support each other and push themselves to make the program better.

    Lacey Castellano, MD
    Pediatrics Resident, PGY 3

I’m originally from Denver but spent my whole adult life prior to residency in Portland, Oregon. I wanted to come to VCU because the program was the right size and the residents seemed very fun and supportive of each other. I was surprised how much I like Richmond, as I thought it would be wildly different from Portland. I like that people here are outdoorsy, love art and good food, and there’s easy access to hiking, beaches and wineries.

I’m interested in pediatric hospital medicine, palliative care and child abuse prevention. Outside the hospital, I like karaoke, scuba diving, soccer (Go Timbers!) and my adorable niece and nephews.
