Pediatric neurosurgery focuses on issues in the brain, spine or peripheral nerves that require surgery while these areas of the brain are still developing. This includes surgeries for children before birth, immediately after birth, during infancy, childhood, adolescence or even in adulthood if the condition continues to persist.

      Specialized Care for Children

A pediatric neurosurgeon is a neurosurgery subspecialist with additional training and certification who concentrates on the care of children from birth to age 22. Pediatric neurosurgeons are trained to operate on the skull, brain, spinal column, spinal cord and nerves.

Pediatric neurosurgery was developed as an extension of general neurosurgery because a child's developing nervous system is not merely a miniature version of an adult's. The conditions and diseases seen in children are also considerably different from those seen in adults.

      Conditions Treated

Pediatric neurosurgeons at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) are expertly trained to treat the following conditions:

      Minimally Invasive Techniques

      • Minimally invasive craniosynostosis surgery
      • Endoscopic surgeries to cure hydrocephalus without shunts
      • Endoscopic brain tumor surgery
      • Minimally invasive interstitial laser ablation for tumors and seizures
      • Narrow corridor interfascicular subcortical surgical techniques
