    Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism

    The Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU is the region's most comprehensive program for children with diabetes and other endocrine disorders. Our multidisciplinary team of experts offers medical care, clinical research trials, medical nutrition therapy, psychological support, education and support groups all in one location.

    Diabetes and Related Disorders

    The center provides complete care for children diagnosed with the following conditions:

    • Abnormal glucose tolerance
    • Acanthosis nigricans
    • Elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels
    • Hypoglycemia
    • Metabolic syndrome
    • Obesity
    • Polycystic ovary syndrome
    • Type 1 diabetes (insulin dependent)
    • Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent)

    Services for children with all forms of diabetes include:

    • American Diabetes Association-recognized diabetes education program
    • Clinical research trials
    • Computerized pump and meter data downloads and interpretation
    • Continuous glucose monitoring systems
    • Health education
    • Insulin pumps
    • Medical nutrition therapy
    • Point-of-care testing for hemoglobin A1C
    • Psychological support
    • Support groups and classes
    • Type 1 diabetes research programs
    • Type 2 diabetes clinical trials

    Diabetes prevention services and additional healthy lifestyle management services include:

    Endocrine disorders

    Our center provides diagnosis, treatment and management for all endocrine disorders, including:

    • Adrenal disorders
    • Endocrine tumors, polyglandular autoimmune syndromes
    • Growth disorders: Turner syndrome
    • Hyperlipidemia
    • Hypertension
