Dentistry for Children with Special Needs
Specialists in pediatric dentistry at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU provide routine dental care for children with cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, severe behavioral disorders, severe developmental delays, brain injuries and other similar conditions.
Care of special needs children often involves treatment in the operating room, which can be performed as same-day dental outpatient surgery under general anesthesia. Our operating room staff and anesthesiologist are experienced in treating children with special needs.
Our program's dental suite is designed to be accessible for non-ambulatory children and is available for scheduled surgical appointments four days a week.
After addressing immediate oral health care needs, our dental specialists encourage a return to the dental clinic every three to six months for checkup appointments without the use of sedation. These appointments include a focus on behavioral modification, prevention and oral hygiene improvement.
CHoR is a participating provider for the Virginia Medicaid Smiles for Children network.
