Dr. Kirkpatrick is a specialist in neonatal-perinatal medicine and in 1973 he established the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Central Virginia, which by 1986 was one of the largest units on the East Coast of the U.S. He has authored seven book chapters in pediatric text books, and published more than 40 scientific articles and more than 30 research abstracts. He is a former member of the MCV Foundation Board of Trustees and a member of the MCV Alumni Association Board of Trustees. Dr. Kirkpatrick is heavily involved in the training of medical students and pediatric residents.
Dr. Kirkpatrick retired from VCU in 2013 after 40 years of service. However, he continues to attend teaching conferences and to see general pediatric patients in the PGP clinic with the pediatric residents several days a week.
