Research Interests

Clinical trials: Dr. Francis is the principal investigator for Trialnet, the NIH-sponsored consortium of diabetes research centers and principal investigator on a variety of industry-sponsored trials to investigate the use of GAD vaccine and anti-CD 3 monoclonal antibodies in new-onset T1DM.

Basic research: Dr. Francis is the principal investigator on investigations into the role of prolactin receptor gene polymorphisms in gestational diabetes, epigenetic changes in T1DM, chromatin modifications in T1DM, and an investigator on the role of adenovirus-36 in childhood obesity and diabetes.

Bio

Dr. Francis joined the division in 2005 after having previously held faculty appointments at the National Institutes of Health, The Medical College of Georgia and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). While at the USUHS, he directed the Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship Program for 10 years and trained more than 15 fellows. Graduates from that program have assumed leadership roles as director of the Pediatric Fellowship Program, USUHS, and the chief of pediatric endocrinology at Madigan Army Medical Center, Tripler Army Medical Center, Naval Hospital San Diego, Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. Others now serve as pediatric endocrinologists at Yale University, and the children?s hospitals in Akron, Ohio, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Detroit.

Dr. Francis is an elected member of the Society for Pediatric Research, The Endocrine Society, the Pediatric Endocrine Society, the American Thyroid Association, the Children's Oncology Group and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is chair of the Taskforce for Guideline Development for Management of Children with Thyroid Cancer of the American Thyroid Association and previously served on the Guidelines committee for management of medullary thyroid cancer of the American Thyroid Association. He is senior guest editor for a Special Edition of Journal of Thyroid Research on Autoimmune Thyroid Disease of Children and a reviewer for many journals, including J Clin Inv, J Clin Endocrinol Metab, and Thyroid.
