Financial Assistance Program

Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU is proud of its mission to provide quality care to all who need it. If you do not have health insurance and worry that you may not be able to pay in full for your child's care, we may be able to help.

Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU provides financial assistance to patients and families based on their income, assets, and needs. It is important that you let us know if you will have trouble paying your bill. To meet certain federal and state requirements, the hospital must bill all patients for the amount they owe and attempt to collect those debts in the same fashion for all patients. This means we may turn unpaid bills over to a collection agency, which could affect your credit status.

To be considered for financial assistance, a patient must be a Virginia resident and either a U.S. Citizen or a documented legal alien that qualifies under the current Medicaid or FAMIS eligibility criteria. In addition, a family must cooperate with the Hospital to explore other financial resources that may be available to pay for their child's health care. The Financial Assistance Program is available to all patients whose family demonstrates and can prove an inability to pay for all or portion of their outstanding hospital bill under our Financial Assistance Guidelines.

All medically necessary services provided by the hospital that are ordered by a physician are covered. In order to determine eligibility for financial assistance, the family must complete a Financial Assistance Application and provide all required documentation. The Financial Assistance Program may apply retroactively up to 90 days prior to application approval. Requests for financial assistance may be made at any point before, during, or after the provision of care. Any services provided prior to the financial assistance program approval and prior to the 90th day prior to approval are the family's responsibility.

For questions or inquiries regarding our Financial Assistance Program, please call 804-321-7474 and ask for the Patient Accounts Department representative identified on your bill. We will treat your questions with confidentiality and courtesy.
