Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program Receives National Accreditation
Sunday, July 13, 2014
In July 2014, the bariatric surgery program at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU received accreditation by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) as a Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Qualifications. CHoR is the only accredited adolescent bariatric surgery center in Virginia, and one of several in the Mid-Atlantic region.
This accreditation demonstrates CHoR's commitment to delivering the highest quality care for its adolescent bariatric surgery patients. MBSAQIP accredits inpatient and outpatient bariatric surgery centers in the United States and Canada that have undergone an independent, voluntary, and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards. Accreditation for metabolic and bariatric surgery not only promotes uniform standard benchmarks, but also supports continuous quality improvement. MBSAQIP Accredited Centers have demonstrated compliance with nationally recognized standards and successfully completed an on-site visit by a trained surveyor. Because optimal surgical care requires documentation using reliable outcomes measures, MBSAQIP Accredited Centers are required to report clinical outcomes data on 100% of all metabolic and bariatric procedures to the MBSAQIP Data Registry and continually review their data to inform quality improvement initiatives at the center.
