Your child's urinary problems can be far more complex to diagnose and treat than simple bedwetting  or infection might indicate. The pediatric urologists at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU have special expertise in both acute and chronic conditions, with a special focus on:

    • Diagnosis and treatment of congenital problems
    • Improving urologic function
    • Maintaining a healthy urinary system

Our specialists provide clinical evaluations, diagnosis, treatment and surgery (if indicated) for the following urologic conditions:

    • Antenatal hydronephrosis (fluid-filled enlargement of the kidneys, detected by fetal ultrasound)
    • Bedwetting
    • Dysfunctional voiding
    • Hydrocele (scrotal swelling)
    • Neurogenic bladder, due to spina bifida or spinal cord injury
    • Penile anomalies, including hypospadias (abnormal opening)
    • Posterior urethral valves
    • Recurrent urinary tract infections
    • Undescended testis
    • Urinary incontinence
    • Urinary tract obstruction
    • Vesicoureteral reflux (abnormal urine flow from the bladder to the upper urinary tract)

    Diagnosis and Treatment

Testing and treatment are individualized to your child's medical and developmental status and may include:

    • Biofeedback
    • Bladder retraining
    • Nuclear medicine studies
    • Ultrasound
    • Urine studies and hematologic evaluation
    • Urodynamics with fluoroscopy
    • Voiding cystourethrogram

If surgery is indicated, our team prefers to use minimally invasive or robot-assisted techniques to minimize pain, blood loss and scarring, and to speed recovery.
